Statement of Faith

STATEMENT OF FAITH

What we believe

SOWERS Church of Christ embraces the following statements concerning the truth. The Bible is our all-sufficient rule for faith and practice. This Statement of Fundamental Truths is intended as a basis of fellow ship among us (i.e., that we all speak the same thing; I Corinthians 1:10; Acts 2:42), the truth revealed to cover our need as to these fundamental doctrines. We believe that this Statement of Fundamental Truths is based on the inspired Bible truth (Luke 1:1).

The Atonement

The death of Jesus Christ on the cross paid the penalty for the sins of the whole world; which benefit only those who will receive the only begotten Son of God. His blood shed for our redemption and His wounds for the healing of our body, soul, and spirit. (1Peter 2:23-24; Romans 5:8-11; John 3:16)

The Grace of God

1. Manifested in God’s divine plan of salvation (Ephesians 2:8-10; John 3:16; Romans 10:8-13)
2. The true believer of Jesus Christ must endure to the end (Matthew 24:13; Romans 1:17; Hebrews 10:38-39)

The Sanctification Process

By the power of the Holy Spirit we strive to obey the command, “Be ye holy, for I am holy.” Sanctification is the will of God for all believers, and should be earnestly pursued by walking in obedience to God’s Word (1Peter 1:15-16; Hebrews 12:14; Ephesians 4:17-32; 1Thessalonians 4:3-8; 5:23; Romans 12:1-2)

Cooperation is desirable between the various Christian denominations, when the end to be attained is itself justified, and when such cooperation involves no violation of conscience or compromise of loyalty to Christ and His Word as revealed in the New Testament.

(Galatians 5:22-23)

The Gifts of Ministry

(Ephesians 4:8-16; 1 Corinthians 12:28)

The Evangelism and Mission

1. Ministry of Reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18) It is the duty of every child of God to seek every opportunity to win the lost to Christ by verbal witness undergirded by a Christian lifestyle, and by other methods in harmony with the gospel of Christ.
2. Believers are ambassadors of Christ to the world (2 Corinthians 5:20)
3. Fulfilling the great commission- a duty and a privilege of every follower of Christ and of every church of the Lord Jesus Christ to endeavor to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20). The new birth of man’s spirit by God’s Holy Spirit means the birth of love for others. Missionary effort on the part of all rests thus upon a spiritual necessity of the regenerate life and is expressly and repeatedly commanded in the teachings of Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ has commanded the preaching of the gospel to all nations (Matthew 24:14).

The Tithes and Offering

1. Tithes existed both in the Old and New Testament (Genesis 14:20; Numbers 18:21-24, Matthew 23:23)
2. Tithes belong to God (Leviticus 27:30-33)

God has ordained the family as the foundational institution of human society. It is composed of persons related to one another by marriage, blood, or adoption. (Genesis 1:27-28)
2. Marriage and Sexuality

B. Biblical model of marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant of commitment and exclusive union for a lifetime. (Matthew 19:4-8)
C. Marriage covenant is dissolved by physical death (Romans 7:2-3)
D. God intends sexual intimacy to only occur between a man and a woman who are married to each other. It is God’s unique gift to reveal the union between Christ and His church and to provide for the man and the woman in marriage the framework for intimate companionship, the channel of sexual expression according to biblical standards, and the means for procreation of the human race (Matthew 19:4-6; Hebrews 13:4)
E. The marriage relationship models the way God relates to His people. A husband is to love his wife as Christ loved the church. He has the God-given responsibility to provide for, to protect, and to lead his family. A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the headship of Christ. She, being in the image of God as is her husband and thus equal to him, has the God-given responsibility to respect her husband and to serve as his helper in managing the household and nurturing the next generation (1 Corinthians 7:1-16; Ephesians 5:21-33; 1 Timothy 5:8,14; Titus 2:3-5; 1 Peter 3:1-7)
F. Any form of sexual immorality, adultery, fornication, homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexual conduct, incest, bestiality, pornography, any attempt to change one’s gender or disagreement with one’s biological gender is sin and offensive to God. (Exodus 20:14; Hebrews 13:4; Galatians 5:19, James 4:4, Romans 1:24-32; Leviticus 18:4-24)
3. Parents are to demonstrate to their children God’s pattern for marriage. Parents are to teach their children spiritual and moral values and to lead them, through consistent lifestyle example and loving discipline, to make choices based on biblical truth (Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 6:4; Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 6:4-9; Joshua 24:14-15)
