Today’s Food for the Soul: Romans Chapters 14-16

In Word and Deed

“For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ has not accomplished through me, in word and deed, to make the Gentiles obedient.” (Romans 15:18, NKJV)

The Apostle Paul was writing to the church in Rome about preaching the gospel to the Gentiles. Not only did he seek to inform the nonbelievers about the Word of God, but he also wanted to show the Lord’s power in his own life. To Paul, a preaching was not complete without the power of the Spirit of God. Appealing to a person’s intellect can only go so far in convincing them to live according to God’s law. If they could see God’s good and awesome works through the lives of His followers, people would understand why Christians choose to follow Christ. (See Hebrews 2:3-4)

It is easy to fall into the mental trap that following Christ is merely reading and hearing words from the Bible. Signs and wonders seem rare nowadays, but that does not mean that God has stopped working during our time. Since it is our duty to reach the lost, God would not leave us to depend on preaching by word alone. Let us trust that God will do what He promised when we follow His commandments. If we live by Christ’s Word, then the works of the Lord are bound to happen through us.

The Word of God is more than just words. It is alive with the Spirit of God, and it is full of power and promises. If we are expected to share about Jesus in word and deed, then we should expect that God will clearly work signs and wonders in our lives. When you start realizing how God’s works are apparent in your life, remember to speak boldly about them with your neighbors, friends, and family.
