Today’s Food for the Soul: Galatians Chapters 1-3
Free from the Law’s Curse
“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20, NKJV)
Aren’t you thankful that we’re no longer under the curse of the law? That is, that we “no longer rely on works of the law” (Galatians 3:10) to get us to God? That’s right! Chapter 3 of our brother Paul’s letter to the church in Galatia explains this: “Cursed be everyone who who does not abide by all things written in the Book of Law, and do them” (ESV).
You see, before our Lord Jesus Christ became the ultimate gift to man, the perfect sacrifice that would serve as the once-and-for-all atonement for all sin, it was practically impossible for man to be worthy enough of His grace. It was – in all honesty – a lost cause simply because we could never be blemish-free. We could never be sufficiently sanctified for God’s acceptance! No number of laws obeyed nor animal sacrifices offered on the altar could reconcile us to God – only Jesus Christ!
But “Christ Jesus redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us — for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree’ — so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith” (Galatians 3:13-4, ESV).
