Today’s Food for the Soul: Luke Chapters 14-17

Today’s Food for the Soul: Luke Chapters 14-17

What is Our Duty?

“So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.’” (Luke 13:27, NKJV)

Servanthood is an essential aspect of the Christian life. Knowing and understanding our position is a strong foundation where we can stand and build upon as we continue our journey to our eternal destiny.

Let us take this conversation from a human perspective. Imagine yourself being a servant to King Solomon– would you not feel honored serving him? Think of the privileges you may receive because of the association you have with him. But with that relationship comes responsibility, commitment, and loyalty.

Why couldn’t this be in the mind of each of us, who takes the name of Jesus Christ over our head, claiming He is our Lord? Understanding the concept of lordship will take us to a better place of obedience as faithful servants and stewards of our Lord.

In this passage, He emphasized that we are expected to obey His commands and do it with joy. And through Him, we should take it as a privilege that we are servants to the Most High God, the creator of heaven and earth!

The Lord Jesus pointed out that God cannot be in debt to us.

King Solomon emphasized it when he says, “And now we thank You, our God, and praise Your glorious name. “But who am I, and what is my people that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from You, and of Your own have we given You.  (Chronicles 29:13-14, NKJV).

Let us pause for a moment and reflect – this is a call to cross-examine our hearts. How do you take it when you are doing something for God’s Kingdom, either as a volunteer or being voluntold?  Some more questions to ponder upon… How do you stand before our God? Are you doing your duty according to the gift and capacity God bestowed upon you for His Kingdom, willingly and with joy?

It is clear, our good works are expected as an outcome of our lives living in freedom (2Timothy 2:21). Our fruits are anticipated, just like a tree – yielding the fruits of its season! As the passage states, it is our duty to obey, to do good works, and bear fruits as servants!
