Today’s Food for the Soul: Matthew Chapters 8-10
The Power to Forgive
But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—then He said to the paralytic, “Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” (Matthew 9:4-6, NKJV)
The crowd was amazed when they saw and witnessed how the Lord Jesus healed the person with paralysis but missed the vital part – Jesus has the power and authority to forgive sins!
The Lord Jesus can heal us from physical ailments, sickness, diseases, and most importantly, from spiritual infirmity called sin. Always remember that Jesus forgives sins when we repent.
Moreover, the Lord Jesus commanded us to forgive those who wronged or hurt us (Matthew 6:14-15; 18:21-35). A simple command but may seem very challenging to execute. We may find it hard to pardon an offender, but it is possible with the help of the Holy Spirit.
The act of forgiveness is powerful and liberating as being healed from paralysis. It releases our hearts from the heavy load and bitterness of unforgiveness. It enables us to walk freely.
Furthermore, forgiveness is an authority that Lord Jesus Christ delegated to us as His followers (John 20:23). Therefore, forgive others because He forgave you (Colossians 3:13).
